8th Annual International Day of Remembrance
June 8, 2019 @ 8:00 am - 2:00 pm
FreeEach year, on the second Saturday in June, a Remembrance Day ceremony is held at Buckroe Beach, paying tribute to the millions of African men, women and children who perished during the Middle Passage of the Transatlantic Enslavement Trade. Honor the lives lost and acknowledge this often untold chapter in American and global history. This event reminds us “the past and the present, the living and the dead are connected” (Blakey, 1998) and it is because of this sacred connection and our commitment to the preservation of our history and culture that we gather at Buckroe to remember those brave souls who never made it off the enslavement ships. Presented by The Sankofa Projects and the Hampton History Museum
